A walk to prevent childhood obesity

The Charlotte Chapter of The Links Inc. will sponsor a two-mile walk on to raise awareness about childhood obesity.

The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, in at Marshall Park.

The Charlotte chapter launched its ‘Childhood Obesity Initiative” in February, 2009. The effort focuses on physical fitness to avoid obesity.

According to some measures, obesity is the most common chronic disease among children, with 30 percent of children aged 6 to 19 being overweight or at risk for being overweight. The problem is most acute among Latino boys and African American girls.

"The walk is designed to bring families together for a morning of fun and fitness,” Chapter President, Eddyce Hobson said in a statement.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the walk will start at 9:30 a.m.

Matt Murphy, a 10-year-old described by some as a racing prodigy, will attend the event. He will take part in the walk, show off his car and discuss his budding racing career.
