A prayer for the people of Haiti
Last week we celebrated the birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. amid the
devastation in Haiti. As our Haitian sisters and brothers are continuing to survive in spite of, we the world look on in shock and dismay, yet God is still working miracles 11 days after the earthquake – another young man was found alive. Praise Him from whom all of our blessings flow.
Miracles have always been in our midst, but we have simply been too busy to recognize them. God is still here.
Some people in the religious community want to claim that our sisters and brothers in Haiti made a pack with the devil, and thus, this is the result. How insensitive can one be to a people that believes and worships God in their own way.
King left us with a legacy to fight to free the oppressed and take care of the poor. Who will determine who gets access to the millions of dollars being raised to help the Haitians? Will it be the 1 percent, the haves, or the 90+ percent, the have-nots who are living in deplorable conditions?
What is God really trying to say to the world as we look on? I just believe that God is saying that, yes, we ought to pray, but that we also must go to work to insure that our sisters and brothers will have an improved community with access to proper housing, access to jobs, health care, food and clean water.
So as we continue to follow the reports and updates on the progress in Haiti, let us be mindful and prayerful that God, who has all power, will sustain us all.

Our Most High God,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth. We come with praises of thanksgiving for Your miracle of life to us all. We come thanking You for whispering Your Holy Spirit into each and everyone of us, especially our sisters and brothers in Haiti, who need to know that You are still with us. Holy Spirit, continue to whisper compassion, sincerity and comfort to Your children as they seek to rebuild their community. Allow Haiti to overflow in abundance with food, fresh water, medical supplies, housing and the work of humanity across the globe to create a viable nation.
Gracious God, put a hedge of protection around the families who are exposed to the elements and various diseases that will plague the land. Provide comfort to all who have lost loved ones as well as their earthly possessions. Give them the Spirit of peace and assurance that You will never leave us alone.
Remind us, Oh Lord, that when we are in Your hands we are secure. With Your eyes, You are watching over us. With Your heart, Your compassion, mercy and grace continue to flow. With Your very presence, we can say that we are stronger because of our relationship with You. Teach us to lean and depend more on You. Help us to realize that as believers, we are one.
It is the Strong Name of Jesus, Your Son, that we lift this prayer! Amen, Amen and Amen.
