There is an old-time spiritual entitled “In Times Like These” that reminds me of the difficult journey that the writer must have encountered which inspired her to write such a heartfelt song.

What do you think about when you hear the phrase in times like these? Are you thinking about the many prayers our God is answering for you in times like these? Are you looking back over your life and thanking God for bringing you through some really tough times?

In times like these, just how has God answered your prayers? In times like these, whom do you call? As you go about this week, I invite you to reflect on how our ancestors survived slavery, Jim Crowism and the rigors and the indignities put upon them during the civil rights movement -- all of this to achieve their God-given rights.

I am certain they knew on whom to call. Likewise, we too, know on whom to call. So let us pray mightily for answers “in times like these.”

Our most wise and determined God:

We come seeking a word from you, our Heavenly Father. We come with a sense of urgency as we are faced with living on the meagerness of life. We come with a sense of depravity and doubt. We come with a sense of being locked in and left out. We come with a sense of forgetfulness of the Great I AM who promised never to leave us or forsake us.

So, Heavenly Father, in all of your great understanding of us, your wayward and forgetful children, help us to find our way back to you. Help us to understand that in times like these, there is an anchor and that anchor is you, our most wise and determined God.

Help us to understand that in times like these we need to return the written Word for comfort and encouragement. Help us to understand that in times like these, we need to remember that we have a Father who owns all. Help us to understand that in times like these, we must ask for your forgiveness and turn from our wicked ways. Help us to understand that in times like these, it is our faith and trust in you that will see us through.

Help us to understand that in times like these, we need to seek your face and pray consistently and persistently until our change comes. Help us to understand that in times like these, we need to hold on to you, our anchor. Help us to understand that in times like these, our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, is here to guide and direct us. Help us to understand that in times like these, all we need to do is to call on your name; seek your face; and thank you in advance for what are doing in times like these.

It is in the matchless name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ, that I pray this prayer. Amen. Amen. And Amen.
