JCSU hires former Steeler to launch spiritual life center
Johnson C. Smith University has hired former Pittsburgh Steeler Donnie Shell to research and offer recommendations on a new spiritual life center.
The Center for Spiritual Life will “facilitate spiritual and religious dialogue on campus,” the school said in a press statement today.
Shell, who won four Super Bowls and now works as a consultant, will develop and implement programming to at the center. His firm also will assist JCSU in outlining the responsibilities of the centers’ eventual director.
“In my conversations with Mr. Shell, I have been impressed with his approach to mentoring young people spiritually,” JCSU President Ronald Carter said in the statement. “I have asked him to develop a similar mentoring program on campus.”
In addition to its focus on campus, the center also will reach out to the surrounding religious community.
The school said Shell also will play a large role in developing an “appropriate campus response to on-and off-campus crises as well as world tragedies.”
“We envision that the programming of the new center will serve as a catalyst for our students to strengthen their spiritual base,” Carter said. “I want our students to have the opportunity to understand and appreciate the variety of religious experiences that are prevalent on our campus. Through their participation, students will have various opportunities to delve deeper into their own personal convictions.”
Shell retired from the NFL as a five-time Pro Bowler with 51 career interceptions. He also worked as the director of player development with the Carolina Panthers from 1994-2009.
