More than 6,000 children in Mecklenburg County have no homes. Another 50,000 qualify for reduced-price meals at school.

April 29 to May 1 has been designated as a weekend of prayer for children. Area houses of faith, as well as non-profit organizations, are calling on believers to pray and consider ways to help the youngest and most vulnerable in society, particularly as governments work to establish budgets for the coming year.

Covenant Presbyterian Church is hosting a Christian prayer service on Sunday, May 1, and the public is invited.

School board member Tom Tate and Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners chair Jennifer Roberts will be speak at the event.

The service will be followed by facilitated conversation, led by Qcitymetro.com editor and publisher Glenn Burkins. Discussions will center on ways the community can respond to the needs of Children.

“This will be a powerful and important event in the life of the faith community and –more importantly – the life of children in our city,” said the Rev. Bob Henderson, senior minister at Covenant Presbyterian. “I’m confident our efforts will honor the God of all children and that God will bless our endeavor far more than we could ask or imagine.”
