Powerball winner gives $10 million to HBCU
The Rev. Solomon Jackson Jr., the Columbia man who won last summer’s $259.9 million Powerball jackpot, on Thursday handed Morris College a check for $10 million.
Jackson, a retired state employee, had said when he won that he would use part of his winnings to bless others.
"I thank God for this day," he was quoted as saying to a packed auditorium on the Sumter, S.C., campus. "This is a day that the Lord has made, and I'm going to rejoice and be glad in it."
School President Luns C. Richardson compared the gift to other landmark days in Morris College history, including the school’s founding in 1908 and its accreditation in 1978.
Richardson said the money will be used in a variety of areas, including scholarship endowment and dormitory construction and repairs.
It is believed that Jackson took a one-time payout worth $129 million, or $88 million after taxes.
