The violent wind of God
They were all together in one place, waiting, waiting for the presence of the Comforter,
as our Lord Jesus had promised:
Last week we were reminded that, at Pentecost, eleven of Jesus’ disciples waited in one place and a violent wind rushed through the room, filling each of them with such a powerful thrust of the Holy Spirit that they were all speaking in their own languages and yet it was the very same Word to all.
What is the lesson for us today?
Surely if our Heavenly Father made it possible for persons of different languages, cultures and communities to understand His Word in their own tongues, He can do the same today. Let us remember the God we serve is still the same God that met the eleven in the upper room.

Our Heavenly Father,
We come to you with an abundance of thanks, for you did a powerful act when you sent that violent wind into the upper room to empower Your disciples to speak our Word in their own tongues.
We thank you because that same violent wind comes by the households of faith with a force to be reckoned with. We thank you because, as the wind blows, it sweeps out and removes the decay of unbelief, false believers, and false teachers. We thank you because, as the wind blows, it fills the believers with the Holy Spirit of righteousness, goodness, forgiveness and a repentant heart. We thank you for the story of Pentecost, for it reminds us that we are all God’s children.
Oh Lord, our God, increase our capacity to withstand the violent wind of your presence that we may hear your voice and that we may speak your truth in love and with conviction.
Give us the strength to withstand the undercurrent of false teachers, the unbelievers and false believers. Give us the grace and the mercy to endure and the surefootedness to stand firm as our Savior, your Son, Jesus the Christ, did when he died on the cross and was buried for our sins and rose from the dead to set us free.
It is in that name, that very strong name, Jesus the Christ, I lift this prayer. Amen Amen and Amen.
