Have you noticed? Locks are everywhere, and they come in a variety of styles and sizes. From the shoestring locks to the one-lock knotty some holy men wear, the possibilities are endless.

They also require special attention.

When cultivating locks, hair texture and density will play a huge role in determining what size you want to consider: If you have thin hair with high density (a lot of hair per square inch), then your locks can be bigger then someone with thin hair but low density (less hair per square inch).

This important choice relates to the weight your root area can hold. The root of your hair is its anchor, and those roots can weaken over time if the weight of your hair is excessive. This should not be a factor for those who prefer their locks shoulder length or shorter.

As locks are growing, be sure to shampoo every two to three weeks. This will keep the hair free from dirt and oils that can build up on the scalp and tress.

I recommend Paul Mitchell’s Tea Tree Shampoo, then a conditioner such as Jane Carter’s Revitalizing Leave-In to keep the locks soft and free from he buildup one gets from thick, creamy conditioners.

After the hair is clean, re-twisted and clip down or roller set your tress then sit under a dryer until the hair is dry. I also recommend covering the locks to keep them fresh. My pick of head dressings for men and women can be found at www.dreadsock.com. If you choose to add moister, try Herbal Hair Rejuvenator found at www.crsecrets.com.

With proper cultivation, your locks will be the envy in the lock world. So don’t be afraid to try different styles. You might just inspire someone to lock-it up.
