A natural take on hair
As a licensed cosmetologist in three states (NJ, NC, SC), I have found my passion
working with healthy, natural hair.
It was not a conscious decision. Sickness made me choose the natural hair route.
Eighteen years ago many of my clients wore relaxers, and I was doing perms on a daily basis. But yearly chest colds and bronchitis had me running to doctors far too often.
My physician said I had a hypersensitivity to many hair chemicals. I would have to stop using them or risk a future behind an oxygen mask.
Because I wore my hair natural (chemically free), it did not take me long to accept this reality. I took a break from doing hair and came back servicing only my chemically free clients.
I have worked for Jane Carter (yes, the one with the hair care line!) and Mary Swann (stylist to the stars), and I learned all I could about natural hair and its many textures.
Because I had a passion for color, I did a lot of research to find a brand that would suit my medical needs as well as my clients’. Within a year, I had more clients then I did when I was using chemicals. Plus, I was welcomed wherever I worked, because few New Jersey stylists at the time were doing natural hair.
Before long, I was twisting, roller setting, flat ironing, doing blowouts and styling natural hair with flare. Now my goal is to educate the public on the beauty and health of wearing their hair chemically free and guiding them to find the right licensed stylist, no matter where they are.
In this column, I will share my knowledge and experience in the hair-care industry and explain everyday tips that readers can do easily at home.
