To the Mothers that brought us into the world -- and threatened to take us out...

To the Mothers who diapered us, cooked for us and bathed our brown bodies...

To the Mothers who made us go to church with our dresses pulled down, our pants pulled up and our shirts tucked in and who didn’t care that out lips were poked out....

To the Mothers who had "the look" that could stop our misbehaving from across a room...

To the Mothers who proudly hung our crayon drawings and our macaroni valentines...

To Mothers who kissed our cheeks and spanked our behinds…

We salute you.

To the Mothers who wore safety pins in their underclothes and run-over shoes so that we could have better..

To the Mothers who worked long hours in jobs they hated so they could provide for us...

To the Mothers who sewed prom gowns and who hotcombed our hair without burning our ears...

To the Mothers who taught us to read, taught us to count, who advised us to read "the handwriting on the wall,” who told us "YOU COUNT"…

To the Mothers who made us say Easter speeches and those who put Vaseline on our ashy legs...

To the Mothers who gave up bad men and bad habits for the sake of their children...

To the Grandmothers raising their grandchildren...

We love you.

To the Mothers who demanded our respect and who taught us to respect ourselves...

To the Mothers who doctored our scraped knees and our wounded souls…

To the Mothers who stood by us when we were in love, in college , in jail , in bad relationships, in debt and in trouble...

To the Mothers who cooked Sunday dinners in hot kitchens -- candies yams , fried chicken , collard greens , potato salad...

To the Mothers who taught us about Jesus, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., our ancestors, men, women, the devil...

To the Mothers who forgave us and let us come back home...

We honor you.

To the Mothers, now gone, whose legacies live on -- in us, through us, to generations to come...

To the Mothers whose memories make us laugh through our tears...

To the Mothers whose life lessons get us through this crazy world and whose example we still follow...

We remember you.

To the Mothers of our history who threw off the shrouds of injustice to establish schools, to become business women, to light the way ... Harriet Tubman ... Mary McCleod Bethune ... Coretta Scott King ... Michelle Obama...

We thank you.
