Ballantyne Village Theater will host a screening of the award-winning documentary “Pray the Devil Back to Hell” on Sunday, April 12.

The film recounts how a group of Christian and Muslin women in Liberia pressured their corrupt government and a group of brutal warlords to end a devastating civil war that has raged for decades.

Viewers are introduced to Leymah Gbowee, the determined founder and leader of the Liberian Mass Action for Peace. In a nation where children were being seized and forced into battle, where those who refused were subject to having a hand or leg chopped off, the women staged sit-ins and demonstrations demanding that Liberia’s despotic president, Charles Taylor, negotiate a peace.

Today, the nation founded by freed American slaves is finally beginning to heal, led by Africa’s first female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Taylor now sits in a United Nations prison in The Hague, charged with war crimes.

The documentary runs 72 minutes.
