When I first saw Ron Freeman, I had no idea who he was. What I noticed was his style. It didn’t scream, "Look at me." Still, his look was smooth, like a quick kiss on the cheek -- you appreciate it and it makes you smile.

Over the past two years, I've seen Freeman out in the Qcity, and I’ve admired that he's not afraid to wear color, whether it's a shirt, blazer or in a contrasting detail, such as a pocket square.

Freeman, who directs the Charlotte publication of Uptown magazine, the African American bi-monthly, credits his father with being "a dandy from way back." And although Freeman’s own style has matured, he says he has liked fashion since high school.

The 42-year-old, Rutherfordton native has specialized in luxury marketing/branding for various publications for the past 15 years. He enjoys traveling and finds most of his attire in other cities.

Here, now, are his style essentials:

Describe your style.
Schizophrenic. Typically a strong base in the classic with a touch of personality and fun. Which personality is the question.

What inspires your look?
Mood, the setting I'm dressing for, the surroundings and who I will be with.

Do you enjoy shopping?
Yes. I really enjoy the hunt.

Where do you like to shop?
Anywhere clothes are being sold. I shop Goodwill to luxury. I do most of my shopping when I travel.

What designers do you admire?
This could take some time. Off the top of my head, obviously Ralph Lauren for what he did for American fashion and Tom Ford for reinvigorating the Gucci brand.

What's your favorite color?
Naturally, Carolina blue. I went to Chapel Hill.

What should every well-dressed man possess?
First and foremost, self-confidence. Second, a great tailor. Third, see number one. You have to have the confidence before you have the clothes.

What's your favorite accessory?
Great friends.

You can't wear great friends.
Ok, if you're going to make me pick something, cufflinks and pocket squares. They have to be a little quirky or interesting.

I never leave home without...
My house key and cab company phone number.

Do you wear jewelry?
Yes, my wedding band and Hermes watch. It was a gift from my wife.

What item in your wardrobe can't you live without?
My Seven jeans and my brown driving mocs.

I wouldn't be caught wearing…
A Bolo tie and square-toed dress shoes.

What's your latest splurge?
A Paul Smith suit and couple of Eredi Pisano blazers.

What's your favorite cologne?
L'instant De Guerlain.

What style rules do you live by?
Keep a base in classic and traditional but have fun.
