Deltas of Charlotte offer mentoring programs for girls
The Charlotte Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated is accepting applications for two of its mentoring programs -- Delta Academy and Delta G.E.M.S. (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully).
Delta Academy: Named in honor of deceased member Betty Shabazz, Ph.D., wife of Malcolm X, the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy is a program for girls ages 11 to 14 focusing on math, sciences, technology, and self- esteem, while preparing young African-American women to pursue their dreams and become leaders in the 21st century.
Delta G.E.M.S: An extension of Delta Academy, this program was created for deserving African-American girls ages 14 to 18 to encourage academic excellence and community service. Using components such as scholarship and sisterhood, the program is designed to promote individual growth and college preparation.
“Delta Academy and Delta G.E.M.S. provide an excellent framework for preparing young women academically and to give back to their communities,” said Antoinette Cody, chapter president.”
Parents interested in enrolling their children can download an application from the sorority’s website: http://www.charlottedst.org. There is no fee for girls to participate, and applications must be received no later than June 4, 2010.
