The Southern Women’s Show returns for its 28th year. Shop for gifts, home décor, fashion, accessories, makeup tips, gourmet treats and more. And of course don’t miss the many cooking classes and demonstrations. The show is at The Park Expo and Conference Center (2500 E. Independence Blvd) through Sunday, Sept. 19. Admission: $5-$9. Children under 6 get in free.

If spoken word is more your style, check out SlamCharlotte’s monthly poetry slam tonight (Friday) at the McGlohon Theatre at Spirit Square (345 N. College Street). SlamCharlotte seeks to promote poetic growth, performance enhancement and increased camaraderie among local poets and the community through the monthly slam competitions. The events are held the third Friday of each month, except during CIAA week. SlamCharlotte’s current Slammaster, Bluz, is the 13th ranked individual poet in the world. Time: 8 p.m. Admission: $10

The Charlotte Chapter of The Links Inc. will sponsor a two-mile walk to raise awareness about childhood obesity on Saturday, Sept. 18, at Marshall Park. The Charlotte chapter launched its ‘Childhood Obesity Initiative” in February 2009 to focuses attention on physical fitness and the need to avoid obesity – a problem most acute among Latino boys and African American girls. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the walk will start at 9:30 a.m.
