Flying with food or gifts this holiday season?
So, you found just the right gift for cousin Jimmy, or that sweet potato pie you baked for the big family dinner turned out better than you hoped. Before dashing to the airport with either, know that carrying gifts or food aboard planes can cost you extra time at airport checkpoints.
Here is a list of liquids, aerosols and gels that should be put in your checked bags, shipped ahead or left at home, according to the Transportation Security Administration.
- Cranberry sauce
- Cologne
- Creamy dips
- Gift baskets with food items like salsa, jams and salad dressings
- Gravy
- Jams
- Jellies
- Lotions
- Maple syrup
- Oils and vinegars
- Perfume
- Salad dressing
- Salsa
- Sauces
- Snow globes
- Soups
- Wine, liquor and beer
You may take pies and cakes through security checkpoints, but they are subject to additional screening, the TSA says.
Avoid carrying wrapped gifts. Security officers may have to unwrap them to get a closer look.
