Hoppin' John, a culinary tradition

Growing up in a house that had some great culinary traditions I always loved the New Year. I knew that my mother and grandmother would be making some black eye peas and rice or Hoppin’ John for dinner.

This dish along with many others are said to bring your house good fortune in the New Year. Here’s my version enjoy.

Hoppin’ John (Black Eye Peas and Rice)

Ingredients
1 bag Black Eye Peas
½ Sweet Onion
4-5 Ham hocks or smoked turkey
2 cups White Long Grain Rice
4 cups water
¼ cup corn oil

Equipment

Large Pot

Preparation

Soak Black eye peas overnight
Drain liquid and put bean back in fresh water
Cut onion into thin strips
Heat pot
Add oil
Sweat onions
Add Ham hocks
Add bean and bean liquid
Simmer until beans are tender (do not boil)
Add rice and water
Bring to a boil then reduce to simmer
Cover and cook for 20 minutes
Check rice and beans for doneness
Remove top and cook for 5 more minutes

For Service
Serve with your favorite meat.
