Introducing 'New Courage'

This past weekend, The Levine Museum of the New South unveiled its newest exhibit, "New Courage" — which is shaping up to be one the institution’s most unique and multidisciplinary endeavors.
"New Courage" is actually the culmination of a yearlong partnership between the Levine, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, UNC Charlotte and McColl Center for Visual Arts, asking participants to examine “new” issues that require courage in our community.
Learning from and inspired by the museum’s Courage exhibit — and through workshops, study, collaboration, and reflection —UNCC and CMS students combined historic perspective with contemporary issues. (See video below.)
The exhibit — displaying works of photography, collage, video and more — is the result of a year's worth of professional development for teachers, curriculum development for students, numerous opportunities and forms of artistic expression, exhibit visits, programs and a county-wide student summit.

According to officials at the Levine, 25 high school teachers, over a period of 10 months, inspired more than 875 students in 12 schools to rethink courage today. They were joined by 22 professors and more than 600 undergraduates in a parallel program.
In addition, Sheila Turner, one of the artists-in-residence at McColl was officially designated as "Levine Museum Artist-in-Residence" and has focused her art and worked with students on this same theme. The result is an installation she created for the exhibit titled "Adjusting the Signal" — which depicts images of courage in the projected landscape: television.
