Is chemical alopecia causing your hair loss?
I have been a hair stylist for 22 years, and something I’m noticing is that cases of
chemical alopecia are rising in African American women.
Chemical alopecia is caused by unprofessional use of chemicals by uninformed operators. Unless you see a licensed professional, the consequences caused by relaxers and color could be devastating. I’m talking root damage, hair breakage or total hair loss.
Chemical alopecia can also occur from high PH alkaline in high volume peroxide, which some people mix with bleach to “lift” hair color to a lighter shade.
The only way to know for sure if you are experiencing hair loss due to alopecia is to see a dermatologist. Your doctor will do a test on your scalp to find out what form of alopecia, if any, is causing you to shed hair.
Sometimes hair loss can come from something as simple as being iron deficient.
If you are diagnosed with some form of alopecia, you have options.
One of my clients came to me because she had been experiencing permanent hair loss in the crown of her head. To solve the problem, I gave her hair extensions inspired by the “toupee” and razor cut it to blend in with the rest of her hair.
Even with hair loss, you still can look and feel like yourself.
Talk to your stylist. He or she will help you figure out the best option for your lifestyle.
I love a challenge, send me yours! You may see the answer here on Qcitymetro!
