Here’s a fact I found interesting: A new report says that women 40+ are giving birth in increasing numbers. I admire older women. Their wisdom, grace and panache garner respect and admiration. Accordingly, I applaud their decision to have children, even as some of these new moms are creeping toward retirement. “Since 2008, birthrates among women overall have declined 4 percent, as families put childbearing on hold while they ride out hard times,” reports a New York magazine story. “But among women over 40, birthrates have increased. Among women ages 45 to 49, they’ve risen 17 percent.” Many of the women, of course, used extraordinary means -- such as receiving donor eggs -- to get pregnant. One couple in the New York magazine story, ages 60 and 66, had children ages 7 and 10. Tell me, Qcity family, what do you think of this trend? Is a woman ever too old to have children? Read more:

A Month Dedicated To Women

Seeing more pink than usual? It’s for a good cause – National Breast Cancer Awareness month. October is also designated as Family Health month, Domestic Violence Awareness month and Women’s Health month, to name a few others. In honor of amazing women, I pay tribute to one in particular, my college friend D-Jean, recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Ironically, the news arrives on the heels of her engagement announcement. I’m optimistic that D-Jean’s tenacity, courage and strength will, as with thousands of other breast cancer survivors, propel her to the finish line. Women, I encourage you to take time and seize opportunities to celebrate your health. You deserve it! Meanwhile, read about some local women who are fighting back against breast cancer.

In case You Missed It…

Hometown Honors -- Singer Jennifer Hudson, whose svelte body promotes Weight Watchers, recently opened the Weight Watchers Jennifer Hudson Center on the southside of Chicago, her hometown. “I never thought I would make it to have my own center,” Hudson told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m so honored to be here and see this day.”

Cantaloupe Catastrophe – Monday night I attended an event that served cantaloupes. My trepidation prompted me to choose another fruit. Last week, 12 people died from infections in the U.S. from eating cantaloupes grown in Colorado. The deaths, authorities said, were the most deadly U.S. food outbreak since 1998. Read more

Workers Health Insurance Costs Jump – The cost of living -- gas, housing, groceries, clothing, etc -- continues to escalate. No surprise that health care makes the list, too. Since 2010, the cost for families to have employer-based health insurance jumped nine percent, says a national survey. Read more

The Naked Truth – An elderly man in Attleboeo, MA, was arrested for showing his goodies. According to reports, 65-year-old Robert E. Bailey was spotted washing his car naked at a local car wash. A female passerby alerted authorities, who arrested Bailey for open and gross conduct. I wonder if she called after sneaking a peek?

Until, next time, I wish you good health and wellness!
