Last weekend, I had the privilege to attend filmmaker Micah Lorick’s presentation of “Based on a Couple of True Stories: Dennis & Janice Barker.” All I can say is look out Spike Lee and Tyler Perry! There is a new film director in town. The Janice Barker Episode won the best short film award at the Charlotte Black Film Festival.

I thoroughly enjoyed both films, but like many viewers, I wasn't too fond of one of the characters. I'm anxiously waiting to see the next segment and promise to keep you posted! In the meantime, remember the name Micah Lorick.

As we all know, much has certainly taken place since last week. President Obama released his birth certificate and announced the death of Osama bin Laden. Whether you believe the news or not, one thing is for sure… We can move forward and enjoy this upcoming weekend with special Mother's Day treats!

In case you haven't made weekend plans, take a look at my picks:

FRIDAY
Mainstream media entertained us last weekend with the Royal Wedding, and this weekend we get to enjoy our very own Martha's Vineyard African-American Wedding. Catch the opening night of the new film "Jumping the Broom" starring Angela Basset, Laz Alonso, Paula Patton, Loretta Devine and Mike Epps.

I attended a private screening back in February, and the audience fell in love with this movie. The film is based on two very diverse African-American families who come together for the nuptials of their children. As we all know, even though it's the bride's day, if mom isn't happy no one is happy.

There are many challenges and pleasantries throughout this film. This should definitely be on your list for a special outing this weekend, and when you get a chance, email me on your reviews about the movie. I would love to hear them.

SATURDAY
Mothers' Day Extravaganza! We often celebrate by treating our mothers and wives to a night of dinner, a movie and a greeting card! This year, try something new. Bring the one you love to an inspiring event that will make her laugh and entertain her.
