Shanai Jackson met Jamaal Young during their freshman year at Johnson C. Smith University. Although Shanai’s roommate was Jamaal’s cousin and Shanai was a cheerleader and Jamaal was on the basketball team, they had never met.

Each time the roommate asked Shanai to go with her to visit the cousin, Shanai said no; She was not interested in meeting anyone.

Then one day at cheerleading practice, Shanai injured herself and was forced to sit out.

Jamaal -- the roommate's cousin she had never met -- approached with a sarcastic remark.
