Happy New Year! Now is the time when many of us reflect over the previous year in anticipation of setting new goals. I'm not a believer in setting resolutions, but I do believe in letting the flood of possibility open up.

I remember hearing a quote, which is always in the back of my mind: “Every traveler has a destination. Never pull over and sleep on the road satisfied.” With that being said, I hope, like myself, you are looking forward to driving down the road less traveled.

Tuesday night I had the opportunity to attend opening night (full house) of the musical “Memphis.” In the back of my mind, I was thinking: “Seen one, seen them all.” Boy was I wrong! This fast-paced musical is about one of the first white DJs (Huey Calhoun) to play black music in the turbulent 1950s. The play also tells the tale of Felicia Farrell, a beautiful African American singer Huey has fallen head over heels for and passionately seeks to promote. I hope you are able to catch this energized play before it leaves the Queen City.

Welcome to the first weekend of 2012.

Check out my weekend picks:

FRIDAY
First Friday @The Carriage House on The Wadsworth Estate: I attended an event for the first time last month with a few friends, and it was hot! Guitarist Andrew Williams is hosting, along with the soulful vocals of Miss Beverly Moore and jazz pianist Jay Reese. Heavy hors d'ourves will be served, along with cash bar. This is a small venue so you may want to get there early.

Location: The Carriage House @ The Wadsworth Estate (400 South Summit Ave.)
Cost: $10 in advance; $15 at the door
Time: Doors open at 7 p.m. Show starts at 8 p.m.

SATURDAY
Smooth Jazz Saturday Night with The Destiny Brothers: Calvin Napper and Vincent Crenshaw have both performed with a variety of artists (such as Stephanie Mills, Donnie McClurkin, Jennifer Holiday and Maze). If you have never experienced an evening with this Winston- Salem based band, you are truly in for a royal treat. This is the band's first appearance at Fanz Sports Grill. They are going to rock the house! I'm sure you already know to get there early.

Location: Fanz Sports Grill (3425 David Cox Road)
Cost: Free
Time: 9 p.m.

SUNDAY
Charlotte Build, Remodel and Landscape Expo: Since the Carolina Panthers were not able to make it to the playoffs, this event will surely capture the attention of many fans. The home show will have on hand experienced remodeling and building experts to assist you with all your needs. Now is the time to make your dream home a reality.

Location: Charlotte Convention Center (501 S. College St.)
Time: 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
Cost: Free for children under 18; adults $5
