Larry, it's time to quit or get off the pot
Larry Brown is finally talking.
After laying low for a while and even dodging reporters covering the first NBA draft
workouts for the Charlotte Bobcats last week, it appeared the head coach was willing to answer some questions Monday about his future with the team.
The only problem: He really wasn’t saying much, according to a story in the Charlotte observer. Charlotte Observer. Though Brown was quoted as saying “I'm here, coaching, so obviously I’m under contract, doing my job,” no one knows if that statement will ring true by training camp in October.
With no draft picks available this year and no extra cash in the coffers to woo a high-caliber free agent like LeBron James, Dwayne Wade or Amar’e Stoudemire, Brown seems to be the best thing going for the Bobcats at this point.
General manager Rod Higgins doesn’t seem to be sweating it too much - at least outwardly - but with a few head coaching positions open this summer and several good candidates being rumored with each, the Bobcats could be a team left with slim pickin’s if a decision isn’t made soon by Brown, whose family still resides in Philly.
The Bobcats don’t need another first-year coach. ala Sam Vincent, or an over-recycled one like Mike “the Czar” Fratello. Brown is the man - he’s one of the more admired coaches in the NBA today and his players respect him.
Personally, I would like to see him remain on Charlotte’s bench beyond the next two years on his contract, but the drama is getting old. It’s time to make up your mind, coach!
I suppose team owner Michael Jordan isn’t in as much of a hurry to get an answer from Brown, and that’s all that really counts.
But seriously, Larry, it’s time to make a move. Either you’re staying in the Qcity or heading back to the City of Brotherly Love.
