Michael Jefferson II and Mayila Johnson met in August 2005 while they were attending High Point University.

Four years later, Michael was playing professional basketball in the Euro League. As November approached, Michael was excited about the prospect of being home on his birthday for the first time in eight years

He set about making it a truly special time. He would play in an ABA game, meet with some friends and spend some time with Mayila, who planned to meet him in Kansas City. But that was not the special part.
