Music, fashion, festivals & more
If you’re looking for just one good thing to do this weekend, you may have trouble deciding.
Fact is, the Qcity is abuzz with entertainment options. Here are some of our favorites:
FRIDAY
Internationally famous bassist, vocalist and composer Esperanza Spalding will kick off this year’s Sunset Jazz Festival Friday evening at the Knight Theatre in uptown Charlotte. The 25-year-old prodigy-turned-pro is a gifted young artist. Inspired by the classical training of her younger years, Spalding has created a modern chamber music group that weaves together the innovative elements of jazz, folk and world music. The show is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Tickets range from $29.50 to $64.50. The event is co-sponsored by the Sol Kitchen and the Sunset Jazz Festival.
Charlotte NC Fashion Week continues Friday at the Bank of America Urban Garden in uptown Charlotte. Organizers say this 3rd annual event will be their largest showcase yet, with 18 designers and boutiques representing a host of up-and-coming talent. This year’s theme -- City Confidential: the Fashion Chronicles -- will highlight Charlotte’s growth and budding fashion scene. It also will pay tribute to aspiring individuals who are making it happen. Thursday night was dedicated to local boutiques. On Friday and Saturday the runway will belong to local designers, with some coming from other states. Cost: $35 general admission, $70 VIP and $195 for a three-day VIP pass. SATURDAY
The Sunset Jazz Festival continues Saturday with a free outdoor concert in a new location – Marshall Park in uptown Charlotte. This annual event showcases some of the region’s best jazz performers. So bring you’re blanket and lawn chairs… along with a few good friends. Music begins at 2 p.m. and continues through 8 p.m. The Sunset Jazz Festival is sponsored by Pride Magazine.
If gospel is more your thing, “Praise In The Park” returns to the Qcity at the McCrorey YMCA (3801 Beatties Ford Road). Sponsored by Praise 100.9, this half-day event will include food, fellowship, shopping and lots of inspirational music. Performers will include the Qcity’s own Rev. John P. Kee, LeJuene Thompson, Lowell Pye, Stacey Joseph, Wess Morgan and many more. This free event is scheduled from noon to 6 p.m.
Step Afrika, the world’s first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping, returns to Queens University’s Dana Auditorium. Founded in December 1994, the company is critically acclaimed for its efforts to promote an understanding of and appreciation for stepping and the dance tradition's use as an educational tool for young people worldwide.
