Naomi Sims, first black supermodel, dead at 61

Naomi Sims, known as the first black supermodel has died. The 61-year-old model and entrepreneur died on Saturday in Newark, N.J. of cancer.

She was born in Mississippi and grew up as a foster child in Pittsburgh. Sims modeled in the 1960’s and was the first black model to appear on the cover of Ladies’ Home Journal in November 1968. She also appeared on the cover of Life magazine in 1969.

She later started a line of beauty products and wigs for African American woman called the Naomi Sims Collection. She wrote several books for woman of color including, “All About Health and Beauty for Black Woman” and “How to be a Top Model.”
