Passion, laughter and intimate jazz
Happy Friday, everyone.
As we begin to unwind for another Qcity weekend, I hope those of you who attended the
Sunday evening tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. at Knight Theater enjoyed the festivities. Kelly Price’s singing took my breath away, and can I get an amen for the wonderful choir?
This was one event I will surely mark on my calendar for 2012.
Here are my picks for the weekend:
Friday
If you are feeling blue, which I hope you aren’t, the SlamCharlotte Poetry Slam with slam
master Bluz is the place for you. If you have never attended this monthly event, you don’t know what you are missing! I definitely want to hear your feedback on this event. Passionate poetry for mature adults (no children) that will leave you inspired to put your own thoughts on paper. At $10, this event fits everyone’s budget. Cocktails can be purchased in the lobby. Contains adult language and content. Where: McGlohon Theater (Spirit Square) 345 North College Street. Time: 8 p.m. Price: $10 Attire: Whatever makes you feel comfortable.
Saturday
What is the first thought that comes to mind when you think of “Police Academy”
movies? Well, for me it’s Sgt. Lavelle “Motor Mouth” Jones, better know as Michael Winslow. Mr. Winslow is appearing Saturday evening for one performance. Come on out and get your laugh on. Where: McGlohon Theater (Spirit Square) 345 North College Street. Price: $20. I just called Carolina Tixx and tickets are still available. Time: 7:30 p.m.
Sunday
Ronnie Burrage -- drummer, keyboardist, percussionist and vocalist -- will perform with
special guest, saxophonist Branford Marsalis. Advance tickets are $15 at www.ez-tixx.com or $20 at the door. Ticket price includes a complimentary buffet. Where: Petra’s Piano Bar, 1919 Commonwealth Time: 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. For more information: http://www.ronnieburrage.biz/
