Unless you’ve been living under a rock (or somehow finding a way to avoid contact with all forms of pop culture), you’ve undoubtedly heard about the film “Red Tails.”

So, I’m sure you know that the movie was produced by iconic filmmaker George Lucas, and that it tells the story of the history-making Tuskegee Airmen.

And surely, you’ve caught wind of the controversy around the film — with Lucas relating how Hollywood didn’t want to finance the film due to its all-black cast.

I’m confident, everyone has heard about all of that flap, so I’m not going to waste time recounting the whole ordeal. But I do want to take time to say this: Go see “Red Tails.”

Now, I’m not saying you should go see “Red Tails” because it is an amazing movie. Honestly, it’s a decent film … nothing more.

Without spoiling the plot (which should be fairly evident), it’s an incredibly by-the-numbers piece of cinema. It’s fun and probably perfect for the whole family, but it’s predictable and features a few too many two-dimensional characters, almost to cartoonish levels.

But that’s not really the point.

I say go see “Red Tails,” as many of you plan to do, to send a message to Hollywood. And the message is: African Americans want more, and different types of, black movies … and with bigger budgets.

And that’s it.
