When it comes to starting a new year, weight-related promises top most lists. I suggest adding another: eye health.

Unless you’re a professional, detecting unhealthy eyes can be tricky. Four common culprits -- cataracts, glaucoma, retinal disorders and tearing -- are frequent problems that can be exposed with a simple visit to an eye doctor. Here is a description of each one:

Cataracts: are cloudy areas that develop within the eye lens. They often form slowly and cause no pain, redness or tearing in the eye. Some cataracts stay small and do not alter eyesight. If they become large or thick, cataracts can usually be removed by surgery.

Glucoma: a condition that develops when there is too much fluid pressure inside the eye. Left untreated, this can lead to permanent vision loss and blindness. Most people with glaucoma have no early symptoms or pain. Therefore, it is vital to get eyes checked regularly.

Retinal disorders: The retina is a thin lining on the back of the eye made up of cells that collect visual images, passing them on to the brain. Retinal disorders interrupt this transfer of images. Early diagnosis and treatment of these conditions is important to maintain vision.

Tearing: sensitivity to light, wind or temperature changes often causes tearing. Oftentimes, protecting the eyes (shielding them or wearing sunglasses) can solve the problem. Tearing may also indicate a more serious problem, such as an eye infection or a blocked tear duct.

An eye doctor can treat or correct these conditions if detected early.
