Tips for going green
Beginning next month, Charlotte’s recycling program will be revamped to include new recyclable items, new 96-gallon rollout recycling carts and a new collection schedule.
We asked Brandi Williams of studio b public relations to offer tips for those looking to go
green:
Know what you can recycle: Cereal boxes, paper towel rolls and glass are recyclable in the City of Charlotte (other items are recyclable as well). Every community recycles different things. Find out what can be recycled in your community. You can find out by going to your city's or town's website and searching for recycling. Charlotte residents can find out what materials are recyclable by logging on to http://recycleit.charlottenc.gov. Residents in other Mecklenburg County towns can log on to www.wipeoutwaste.com.
Know your plastics: There are seven different types of plastics, and many of them are recyclable. But there are some that aren't. Make sure you check the type of plastic before putting it in the recycling bin. You can determine the type of plastic by checking the item for the recycling symbol (a triangle made by three stars). Then check the number inside the symbol. The number will tell you the type of recyclable. Compare the number in the symbol with the numbers accepted in your recycling program to determine if the plastic is recyclable in your city.
Reduce, reuse and conserve: Recycling isn't the only way you can go green. Consider these other options:
- Reduce the amount of waste you produce by buying in bulk. Instead of buying lots of individual bags of chips, buy one large bag.
- Reuse items in your home. For instance, you can reuse empty glass candleholders as candy dishes. Also, consider purchasing wooden toys that can be passed down as heirlooms.
- Conserve energy. One way to do this is to use natural light during the day to handle your daily activities at home and work.
