Traditional, with a flair
When most people think about an attorney, they think about law. When I think about
attorney Eric A. Montgomery, I think about fashion.
Montgomery, 45, knows more about the history of men's clothing than anyone I had met.
For him, dressing well isn't simply about buying a custom suit; anyone can do that.
Eric has a unique ability to marry the old (vintage accessories) with the new, which brings a sense of elegance and class to every clothing ensemble he wears.
For him, clothing is about the subtle details and the difference between buttoning a suit jacket made with horn buttons and knowing why you should.
Here's what he says are his style essentials:
Describe your personal style: Traditional with a flair.
Do you enjoy shopping? Absolutely.jpg)
Where is your favorite place to shop? Unique stores, boutiques, places where antiques are sold.
Your favorite designers are: Ralph Lauren, then there is anyone else?
You look you're best in: Suits/sport coats -- a well-dressed man should always have on a coat.
Your favorite color and why: Purple -- the color most closely associated with (Ieosous) Jesus and my fraternity, Omega Psi Phi.
Every well-dressed man should own: the best blue suit his money can buy.
Your favorite accessory: My vintage 1920's, 14-kt gold cufflinks with a tiny diamond in the middle. They are a burnished gold color. I wear them daily despite having a very large collection of cufflinks, mostly vintage items.
I never leave home without my: Watch, keys and my wedding band.
Jewelry or no jewelry? Most days I wear a thin gold wedding band, watch and cufflinks -- simple elegance.
What's your signature piece of clothing? My shoes. I love shoes and have a pretty
nice selection of English and Italian benchmade shoes.
I wouldn't be caught wearing: Square-toe shoes or a skinny tie.
A true sartorialist... always has a pocket square as an accessory to display individuality.
What's your latest splurge? A vintage gold Rolex watch from the 1940's that I found at a small jewelry/pawn shop for an absolute steal.
What grooming products do you use? Kiehl's mostly, and a local shaving product that I plan to help launch in the very near future -- stay tuned!
What's your favorite cologne? Egoiste Platinum by Chanel. I have worn this for about 15 years. I live and swear by it. I always get compliments on it because it is subtle and does not scream "I have entered the room!"
What style rules do you live by? Dress for the job you want and not the one you have; you only have one chance to make the best impression.
If I weren't an attorney I'd be: Owner of a small clothing boutique carrying unique and different brands, vintage accessories and leather goods. My next occupation, once I hit the big case!
Style Advice to others: Find what you are you most comfortable wearing and don't be afraid to stand out from the crowd. Even if you work in corporate America, there are small things you can do to display your individuality. You have only one life to live, so live it!
