Bob Johnson is no humanitarian, writer says
Not everyone is impressed with Bob Johnson’s latest stab at humanitarianism.
The former Bobcats owner announced in late June that he wants to join with other investors to build two factories in Haiti capable of churning out about 800 homes per month.
Johnson made the announcement after returning from a trip to the earthquake-shattered island, where he met with President Rene Preval and Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive.
But Boyce Watkins, founder of Your Black World Coalition, says any effort that involves Johnson will surely put profit above people.
In a recent opinion piece on TheLoop.com, Watkins rattles off a litany of examples to validate his point – starting with BET and ending with Johnson’s call to eliminate the federal estate tax.
“He will throw his black fist in the air, get us all to root for him, and then proceed to doing whatever he can to keep wages as low as possible so he can maximize shareholder profits,” Watkins wrote. “Call me a skeptic, but I find almost nothing humanitarian about Johnson’s Haitian investment.”
