Concord's first black elected official dies

Arrangements A public viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at Lamb Funeral Home, 122 Cabarrus Ave. E., Concord. Burial will be Friday, Nov 18, at 10 a.m. at Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury. A memorial service will start at 2 p.m. in the Kitty M. Sanson Chapel at Barber-Scotia College, 145 Cabarrus Ave. W., Concord. |
Robert Lee Mathis, 77, was born in Cabarrus County April 21, 1934, to the late
Junior Lewis and Minnie Virginia Mathis.
Educated in the Cabarrus County Schools system, he joined the Navy before being elected to the Concord Board of Aldermen (later renamed the Concord City Council).
Also a board chair for the nonprofit Logan Daycare Center, he was an active member of First Christian Church in Concord.
Mathis is survived by his wife, Margaret Miller Mathis; three sons, Calvin J. Mathis of Harrisburg, Rodney L. Mathis and wife, Cynthia, of Missouri City, Texas, and Jeffery L. Mathis of Concord; and one daughter, Kim M. West and husband, Shannon, of Simpsonville, S.C.; 19 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
