OK, fam, I’m here with your BET Awards wrap-up. (Was it me, or was that not the longest awards show broadcast known to man?)
Gotta say, friends, I don’t know how I felt about the near-four-hour show.
On the one hand, I’m glad BET tried to strike a balance between the regularly scheduled program and a proper tribute to Michael Jackson, which had been highly anticipated all weekend.
And I can appreciate the network had only two days to plan a tribute. Still, I felt a little ... cheated. The show opened with all the members of New Edition present and accounted for, performing a medley as the Jackson 5. And for only having two days, they looked good. I just knew this show was going to be live.
But the next three hours and 33 minutes were a bit of a letdown.
The show felt disjointed (in true BET fashion), and it didn’t feel like enough was being done to honor Mike. Direct reflections Usher, Justin Timberlake and Chris Brown were noticeably absent (though it was rumored Breezy would be there, many in the Internet community thought it’d be in poor taste for him to perform).
And where was Mariah, with “I’ll Be There?” Or Rihanna with “Please Don’t Stop The Music” -- her sample of “Wanna Be Startin’ Something?”
On the MJ tribute front, the lion’s share went to host Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo, who seemed to pop up with a song every 30 minutes or so. But it was Janet Jackson who stole the show. She came to thank fans -- on behalf of her family -- for their support. Everyone in the audience was near tears. Janet’s sad but strong statement was darn moving.
Many on Twitter said the network dropped the ball and didn’t do right by MJ’s memory. Quite a few think MTV’s tribute during the Video Music Awards this fall will blow BET out of the water. But what do you think? Did BET do “enough” or will MTV have to redeem this night?
And if you missed the broadcast here are some highlights/low lights:
Highs
*A costumed (read: bell bottoms and fringed vests) New Edition paying homage to J5.
*Ne-Yo’s (first) tribute to Michael Jackson: a soulful, pure take on “Lady In My Life.” In a classic “gentleman” move, Ne-Yo leaves his trademark fedora on ground next to him.
*Jamie Foxx performs “Blame It” in “Bad” tour shirt, then cuts to a rock version featuring Blink 182’s Travis Barker on drums! HAWT!
*Foxx and Ne-Yo are back to perform “She Got Her Own” with Fabolous. Ne-Yo then says he wants to pay homage to male artists, same way Alicia Keys paid tribute to girl groups the year before. He brings out Keith Sweat, Bell Biv DeVoe and Guy to sing some of their biggest hits from the New Jack Swing era. Performance-wise, they might’ve come a little bit harder than the ladies.
*Tyrese, Johnny Gill, Trey Songz and Tevin Campbell honor (quite well) the O’Jays during the Lifetime Achievement Award presentation. Then Eddie Levert and Co. take to the stage and take the young men to school.
Lows
*Soulja Boy performs “Turn My Swag On” jumping on a bed. Umm ... yeah ... Next.
*Beyonce’s take on “Ave Maria” -- in a lacy unitard. And angel wings. And a veil. She cuts in with a verse from Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel.” Then back to “Ave Maria” -- in Italian. I love avant garde but I didn’t get this. (BTW, for a full fashion wrap-up, check out LaShawnda Becoats here.)
*Ciara seems to struggle vocally through MJ’s “Heal The World.” Not as stirring as the other tributes, though nice anyway. I guess.
*Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo performing every three segments. They did another duet to close the show, “I’ll Be There.” Though it was a beautiful tribute, with the two of them at the helm, it was overkill.
Best of the Night
Tributes aside, Maxwell far and away had the best performance. Jay-Z easily comes in second.
Worst of the Night
Joe Jackson and his smug aura. He definitely didn’t look like a man mourning his son. FAIL!
