BET awards – a "sorry" affair

Sunday brought the 10th annual BET awards, where an underlining theme seemed to be redemption.

The network had previously announced there’d be a Michael Jackson tribute again this year, but when Chris Brown hit the stage, the audience erupted in cheers. He opened his salute with “The Way You Make Me Feel,” complete with a blue button-down, bandage-style glove and black loafers.

But the most gripping portion of the near-six-minute medley came during “Man In The Mirror,” when Brown was too racked with emotion to sing. Many of the tears shed were likely for the idol Brown had lost; but given the nature of the lyrics, Brown might have cried, in part, to atone for his own mistakes.

Brown missed BET’s awards last year, as he continued to deal with the repercussions of his attack on then-girlfriend Rihanna.

The network also got a chance to redeem itself: Jackson died just days before the 2009 awards telecast, not allowing time to plan a proper tribute. Many said what the show did plan did not do the King of Pop justice.

R&B artist Trey Songz called Brown’s medley the one for which fans had been waiting.

Another artist who may have been seeking a second chance that night was Kanye West, who opened the awards with new song, “Power.” West had been noticeably absence from the public eye for nearly a year  after he bum-rushed pop star Taylor Swift at the MTV VMAs.

Later in the evening, Brown won the AOL Fandemonium award. During his acceptance speech, he acknowledged mistakes: “I let you down before, but I won’t do it again, I promise.”

Some may question the validity of Brown’s tearful tribute or West’s state-of-mind now that he’s returned to scene, or even BET’s motivation for letting them perform Sunday.

But what did you think? Kanye still got it? Was Breezy sincere?

Yes, I feel it was very sincere. The choice of song was perfect and the overwhelming emotion as you said was possibly a little less about MJ and more about the look at himself.

I do believe this was the perfect moment for him to "get it". What I am referring to is as Oprah says, the "Aha Moment". I also feel that he has paid his dues to a point (but still has considerable work to do). He was young and stupid. As a very wise man I know says, you do only what you know at that time. He didn't know better at the time and did a HORRIBLE thing. I think this particular saying states it all. "The crime is not the crime, but in the missed opportunity to learn from it". Seems he is now taken that opportunity.

I think he was very sincere, see people are not forgiving people sometimes, "folks will remember things that happened in your life 20yrs from now and you probably forgot about it, but they sure still remember, but they person above will forgive so it really shouldn't matter. That problem is between him and they person he pray to at night. Also, I think Alicia Keys went a little overboard "we all know she's w/ child, other than that the show was GREAT!!!!!

I agree, I think that this was both their way of redeeming themselves. As a previous BET intern, I feel that the network did a great job in choosing them to perform for the show! I am a big Kanye fan, so I've missed him and glad to see that he's making a great comeback!! Chris almost made me cry, I think it was very sincere .. I`m glad he's back too!

leave it to a black woman to write a story about two black men one making a comeback and the other very sincere and emotional about the loss of Micheal Jackson and his own troubles. Lets support one another not tear each other down. IAs the writer you are the sorry one looking for a story when there is none
