Family, it’s official.
After weeks of speculation, Drake has chosen to sign with Lil’ Wayne’s Young Money Records.
Drake is the wunderkind we told you about earlier this month.
Sigh. That was anticlimactic.
Drake placed himself at the center of a fierce bidding war among three major labels only to sign with his mentor. The deal breaks down as a joint venture between Young Money and Cash Money, with Universal Republic distributing, according MTV.
Wayne’s protégé recently performed on "The Tonight Show" and at Sunday’s BET Awards. He’ll head out on tour this summer with Lil’ Wayne, Soulja Boy Tell ’Em and Young Jeezy.
His latest mixtape, “So Far Gone,” has gained notoriety and the attention of fans and hip-hop (and R&B) heavyweights such as Bun B, Mary J. Blige, Nas and Talib Kweli. His debut, "Thank Me Later," is due out later this year.
But, as my friend Russell wondered earlier: Can Drake’s debut live up to the hype? Nas recently compared Drake to "fresh water now on dry land." Compliments don't come realer than that.
What do you think, music lovers? Will "Thank Me Later" burn up the charts?
Update (July 2): Check out Drake's new video, "Best I Ever Had." Gotta say, I expected more substance for a song about a woman who's supposed to be his "everything." But maybe that was my mistake.
