OK, family, if you haven’t heard of Mayer Hawthorne yet, it’s time to get familiar.
Hawthorne is a new(ish) soul singer who grew up in Ann Arbor, Mich., a stone’s throw from Detroit. Now as a Stones Throw Records artist, he’s creating buzz with singles such as “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” and “Maybe So, Maybe No.”
Hawthorne says he draws inspiration from the likes of Isaac Hayes, Barry White, Curtis Mayfield and Smokey Robinson.
“Most of the best music ever made came out of Detroit,” he says on the Stones Throw Web site.
And you can definitely hear him channel Mayfield and Robinson on both tracks. In Hawthorne, the Motown sound is alive and well. Even Justin Timberlake has given Hawthorne a nod of approval.
Not bad for a white guy from the ‘burbs, huh?
So, what do you think family? Are you feeling Mayer Hawthorne? Will you check out his debut album, “A Strange Arrangement,” when it drops this fall?
Tip: Mayer Hawthorne is also hitting the road this fall. If you like what you hear, check him out live Oct. 5 in Chapel Hill (Local 506) or Oct. 6 in Atlanta (Drunken Unicorn).
