Ever feel like you were born in the wrong musical era?
Well, listening to Mayer Hawthorne, you’d definitely get the sense he should’ve been plucked from obscurity by Berry Gordy rather than Stones Throw Records.
Because Hawthorne is a crooner. In the truest sense of the word.
He is 1960s, Motor City, blue-eyed soul.
And his debut, “A Strange Arrangement,” is a love letter to Detroit (a stone’s throw from his native Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Midwest R&B.
You can hear The Temptations on “One Track Mind” and “Your Easy Lovin’ Ain’t Pleasin’ Nothin’ ” and Curtis Mayfield on “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” and “The Ills.”
Hawthorne is a throwback to simpler times, but don’t dare call him vintage. Or worse yet, retro.
Hawthorne recently told The Guardian newspaper that “Arrangement” is equal parts Smokey Robinson and (late, Detroit hip-hip producer) J Dilla.
But Hawthorne definitely is breaking all the current rules, focusing on vocals and lyrics rather than catchy hooks and heavy production. He plays all his own instruments, too.
And there’s nothing at all strange about that arrangement.

Jay previously said he would to release his latest effort on Sept. 11, exactly eight years after he released “The Blueprint,” to coincide with his 9/11 benefit concert.
