As the world struggles with the devastating news of the 7.0 earthquake that rocked Haiti Tuesday, at least one celebrity wasted little time getting out the call to action.
Rapper and activist Wyclef Jean released a statement Tuesday evening (via his blog), urging people to help.
“I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse,” Jean wrote. “The over 2 million people in Port-au-Prince tonight face catastrophe alone. We must act now.”
The former Fugees frontman is a longtime Haiti activist, raising money and awareness for the plight of his native country. Jean’s foundation, Yéle Haiti, provides community service programs such as food distribution and emergency relief efforts.
Jean wrote on his blog that people who’re interested in helping with earthquake relief can text “Yéle” to 501501 (to make a $5 donation) or donate at Yéle.org.
