15 West Charlotte grads to receive scholarships
Fifteen African American males from West Charlotte High School will receive $1,000 scholarships to Central Piedmont Community College.
The first group of Anthony Foxx Scholars will be recognized at a 7 p.m. program tonight in the Overcash Building at CPCC. Mayor Foxx will give a motivational talk to the students, who will meet philanthropist C.D. Spangler Jr.
In December, Spangler established the Anthony Foxx Scholars Program to provide scholarships to every African American male who graduates from West Charlotte High School and enrolls at CPCC. The purpose, he said, was to encourage more African American males to stay in school.
Spangler, one of the nation’s richest men, gave more than $4.5 million to various education-related causes in Charlotte last year, including $2 million in college scholarships for African American males who graduate from West Charlotte High.
The Foxx scholarship program will also assist students with their transition to college. Students and parents will participate in financial aid and parent communication workshops. In addition, students will take a campus tour and participate in an academic summer program.
