Man dead in S. Charlotte after shootout with police
A south Charlotte man is dead following a Thursday night shootout with a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer.
The dead man was identified as 48-year-old David Martin Sebaste. The name of the officer was not immediately released.
The incident began around 11:13 p.m. when police received a 911 call about a public disturbance -- a man was outside his home in the 100 block of Hollyday Court cursing and honking his car horn. The caller said the man was armed with a handgun.
The officer arrived and ordered the man to drop the weapon. According to police, the man fired multiple shots at the officer, who fired several rounds back from his service pistol, before the suspect retreated into his home.
The officer was not injured.
After a standoff, a SWAT team entered the house and found the man dead. No other people were inside the house.
Police said the man appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to his lower body. An autopsy will determine the cause of death. Homicide investigators will help determine whether the man was stuck by one of the police officer’s bullets.
Internal Affairs also will investigate to determine whether the officer followed all CMPD guidelines.
