A man is dead and a second is behind bars after a shooting late Thursday night in west Charlotte.

Police identified the victim as James Love, who died a week before his 50th birthday.

Derrick Huey

Charged with murder in the case is 54-year-old Derrick Huey.

The shooting happened in a yard just before 11 p.m. in the 3700 block of Rogers Street, just south of Tuckaseegee Road near the Freedom Mart Shopping Center.

When officers arrived at the location, they found Love lying on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses told police that the two men, who apparently knew one another, had been arguing prior to the shooting. Huey was arrested a short distance from the scene, police said.

Counselors from the Child Development-Community Policing (CDCP) Program were called to the location because several children were inside the home at the time of the shooting, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a homicide detective, or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
