UPDATE: The victim has been identified as Sammy Davis Best, 44. The suspect, Kareem Anthony Banks, 26, was charged with the Murder. Police said the two knew each other.

Police are investigating an overnight stabbing on Independence Boulevard that left one man dead and another injured.

Officers were sent to the 2700 block of East Independence around 2 a.m. Sunday in reference to two men fighting at the Charlotte Inn motel.

When police arrived, witnesses pointed to a man lying on the concrete median that divides Independence near Bojangles Arena. They pointed to a second man who was walking away.

After a brief chase, officers apprehended the man who was leaving the scene. He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The stabbing victim, also taken to Carolinas Medical Center, died shortly after he arrived.

Police did not release the name of either man involved in the fight.

The inbound lane of Independence was closed at the Eastway Drive overpass until about 7 a.m. while police investigated the incident.
