221 CMS teachers became board certified in '09
More than 200 CMS teachers earned their National Board Certification this year, the district announced Wednesday.
With 221 newly certified teachers, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools ranked second in the nation, according to the National Board for Professional Teacher Standards (NBPTS). In total, the district now has 1,439 teachers who hold that designation.
Among the states, North Carolina ranks first with the highest number of newly board certified teachers (1,509) and is ranked first in the total number of teachers who have achieved certification over time (15,695).
CMS is first among N.C. school districts for most certified teachers in 2009. Wake is second with 197, followed by Guilford with 69, Buncombe with 42, and Forsyth with 30.
Teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met “rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review,” the district said. The two-part voluntary process can take up to three years to complete.
North Carolina rewards board-certified teachers with a 12 percent salary increase for the 10-year period of certification.
