Five CMS seniors have been named National Achievement Scholars.

They are:

Kainee Aguilar, Myers Park High
David Ayers, East Mecklenburg High
Wiley Davis III, Providence High
Khalid Love, Vance High
Melanie McRae, Independence High

The five are among more than 800 black seniors nationwide who will receive scholarships totaling more than $2 million.

More than 160,000 students entered the scholarship program when they took the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as high school juniors. In September 2010, about 1,600 of the highest scorers were named semifinalists.

Requirements included high academic performance, a school recommendation, SAT scores that match the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test performance, and an essay.

The program is privately funded by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. It began in 1964 to honor and provide scholarships to promising black American students.
