The 5-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself Sunday has died, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police reported today.

Police did not identify the boy at the request of his parents.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, the boy found the gun after going with his mother to visit a friend in the 8100 block of Tremaine Court in east Charlotte. The child was taken to Carolinas Medical Center where he died Monday morning.

Police said no one would be charged in the case.

N.C. law requires gun owners to store weapons in a place where minors cannot get to them. But the law does not apply in this case because no children live at the residence where the accident occurred.
