Chicago police shoot 13 year old 8 times

The family of Jimmell Cannon is looking for answers after the 13 year old was shot 8 times by Chicago Police on Monday. Cannon suffered gunshot injuries to his shoulders, hand and leg and is currently in serious-to-critical condition at a Chicago hospital.

According to NBC Chicago, the family is contesting the Police report of what happened the night Cannon was shot. On the night of the incident, police were responding to reports of gunshots and say Cannon matched the description of the gunman.

Police say the teen had what appeared to be a pistol in his hands and ran away from them. They say that after refusing commands to drop his weapon, Cannon turned the gun, which police later determined was a BB gun, in their direction and officers were forced to shoot.

Cannon’s family is saying that this account is not true. They say the teen was not holding a gun and that his hands were up when the police opened fire. They told NBC Chicago that the 7th grader is a good kid and is not caught up in the wrong crowd. Cannon’s father, Jimmy Porter, says he expects his son to recover.

Cannon’s grandmother says he was shot down like an animal. Watch his family reaction to the shooting in the video below:

Detroit mayor unveils controversial plan

Not all neighborhoods are equal, at least not in Detroit. Under the Detroit Works Program unveiled by Mayor Dave Bing, the type and level of city services neighborhoods receive will be determined by their condition and occupancy. Things like tree trimming, attracting businesses, code enforcement and public lighting will get more attention in the city's best neighborhoods. While in more blighted and less populated areas, attention would be paid to demolishing vacant houses, boarding up vacant structures, road improvement, and water and sewerage treatments. Bing said the plan, which he called a “short-term intervention,” was drafted to cope with a dwindling population and $155 million budget deficit. "Our focus is going to be on the people in the neighborhoods," Bing said. (Read more here)
