A battle of the undefeated
Each week throughout the college football season I’ll shine the spotlight on an HBCU
matchup. Aside from the game, I’ll also throw in some thoughts concerning the competing bands.
This week it’s North Carolina Central (Eagles) vs Winston-Salem State (Rams). The game will be played in Durham, and both teams are undefeated.
After a four-year absence from the CIAA, Winston-Salem State is
back – and continuing its winning tradition. This is a team that has Division I-caliber players and staff. This was obvious last week when they beat North Carolina A&T
N.C. Central, meanwhile, moved up from Division II to Division I three years ago. It remains an independent and has not joined the MEAC, as expected. Last week they handily beat Johnson C. Smith (who hasn’t?) but will have a tougher contest against WSSU.
WSSU is starting a sensational freshman quarterback, while NCCU has a seasoned veteran under center. NCCU has the better team, but WSSU has the better coach.
Lucky for Central, teams make plays -- coaches don’t. I give the edge to NCCU by 10 points in a tough-fought game.
As for the bands, WSSU’s short bus skit last week at N.C. A&T was hilarious and I believe more will come. I give the band edge to WSSU.
Let me know what you think.
