A good night for JSCU basketball
The Johnson C. Smith University women’s basketball team kept its perfect record alive Monday night by overpowering St. Paul’s College 71-46 inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
It was the team’s first CIAA matchup of the season. JCSU improves to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
The lady Golden Bulls faced St. Paul’s without head coach Vanessa Taylor; who is participating in the 2010 NCAA Women Coaches Academy in Denver, Colorado. Team leader in points, rebounds, and assists LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) also sat this game out due to a concussion suffered during practice.
Senior guard Tyra Breaux finished with a game-high 23 points with four assists and four steals, shooting 70% (7-10) from the field and 66% (8-12) from the free throw line. Junior guard Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) added 15 points and three rebounds.
The women play their next opponent, Chowan University, on Jan. 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Murfreesboro, NC.
The men’s team, meanwhile, beat St. Paul’s 80-77, improving to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the CIAA.
Sophomore guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) scored a career-high 35 points off 11-19 shooting from the floor and 10-12 shooting from the free throw line. Junior center Michael Cooper (New Rochelle, NY) followed with 13 points and two rebounds before fouling out. Senior guard Ronald Thornhill (Alberta, VA) had nine points and reached his 1,000th career point with the performance; he needed to score eight coming into the game.
The men jump back into conference competition on Thursday, December 16, when they face Virginia State University in Brayboy Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
