With loss to Brevard, JCSU drops to 1-3
Johnson C. Smith University fell to 1-3 Saturday after dropping a home game to Brevard College 25-21.
The Tornados struck first and quick. Known for running an option offense, Brevard scored on a 65-yard run from Kelvin Jeter, who finished the day with 124 yards on the ground off 11 carries and two touchdowns. J.C. Smith responded with an eight-play, 59-yard drive, capped off with a one-yard quarterback sneak by senior Ryan Carter.
Brevard broke the 7-7 tie in the second quarter with a 35-yard TD rush from Neville Bryce to complete a nine-play, 80-yard drive. Brevard missed the extra point attempt and the Golden Bulls trailed 13-7.
Johnson C. Smith held a 14-13 edge after the first half and added to it in the third when Carter found freshman receiver Chrishawn Rhyne in the corner of the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown completion.
Brevard marched back 76 yards for a score of its own. JCSU prevented the 2-point conversion and held a 21-19 lead. But the Tornados would take the lead for good after intercepting a JCSU pass and scoring five plays later on a 15-yard touchdown run. The Tornados again attempted a 2-point conversion, but the pass was intercepted by freshman defensive back Kamau Brown.
JCSU’s final scoring opportunity ended with 2:11 left in the fourth quarter. Facing a fourth down with nine yards to go, Carter’s final pass fell incomplete.
J.C. Smith will have time to regroup with a bye week before their next matchup with divisional rival Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, Oct. 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside JCSU’s Irwin Belk Complex.
